Employement Newsletter 1. Introduction to how this will work.

Hello everyone,

My name is Daniel Souza and I am the Ward Employment Specialist. My calling is to help you get the right resources to find a part-time job or help you land that first job in your dream career. So buckle up, a lot of information is coming your way and it’s coming fast!

First things first.

As many of you, I’m new to the ward. Some of you are looking for a career while others will be just fine with a part-time job. Either way there are wonderful resources around us. So if you are on the hunt, feel free to come chat. Come introduce yourself and chances are we may know people (or even places) in common. Provo Town is not that big. And of course, Networking is KEY!!!

Also, BYU, UVU, the LDS Employment Center and a few other venues offer a lot of free (YES FREE) help. You just have to move your behind and go get the help. But don’t sweat it; I will do all I can to help you out. Really!

I will send this email weekly. In it, you will find a few things to help you quickly find what you want, so you don’t have to spend your precious Facebook-stalking minutes reading the whole thing if you are looking for something specific. The sections are as follows:

FEATURED SERVICE – What service or workshop is currently being offered to help you boost your interview, networking, resume-writing or whatever other skill that can help you land that big job, be it working on campus or across the globe.

FEATURED INTERVIEW QUESTION – You and I both know that a chosen resume is nothing more than a chance to get in front of your next employer. But don’t worry; you can breeze right through that interview having done your homework and knowing what to say and how to say it. I will put a weekly interview question here with an equivalent good, better and best answer to the question – all according to some of the best human resource researchers in the industry.

THE JACKPOT TIP – Many of us have had job interviews at some point in our lives. Sometimes we exude confidence during the interview only to find out that the position has been filled and the employer “will call back” if something comes up. Well, most don’t ever get that “call back.” So if you could do one thing that perhaps would put you ahead of the competition, what would it be? I will try to have a weekly tip here for you.

FEATURED FULL-TIME JOBS – I will include a weekly list of jobs looking for full-time help; locally and nationally. Remember that for some of these jobs, you don’t have to have a college degree. Others require a bachelor’s but can hire workers with a few semesters left before graduation.

FEATURED PART-TIME JOBS – I will scoop the most accessible and cool jobs on both UVU and BYU’s campus so you can get employment and ultimately call work leisure. ;-)

I will make sure to also list the jobs around the area geared towards students (you know, 20 or so hours a week.)

CAREER FAIRS – We all come from different places. Did you know that career fairs happen all over the world? Think broadly. Sure many employers come out here to BYU’s and UVU’s backyard, but there may just be something where you grew up also. Don’t underestimate the power of finding excuses for a road trip! I will try to the best of my ability to include the career fairs and the many employers present at the fairs along with the positions they are looking for.

Now, I don’t need to tell you this, but we live in an economical recession. Competition has gotten fierce and employers have plenty of applicants to choose from. Keep in mind that you have to be competitive. You have to “pop” from the resume and certainly make an impression on your future employer (a good one in this case.) In closing I will share a thought I learned from my dad:

You have to try. If you don’t try you have a “no” as is. If you do try and somehow you get a “no,” then you haven’t lost anything. So you really have nothing to lose!

Now I’ve got to go put your weekly email together with all that good info. See you around in cyberspace or at the Pioneer building.
